My wife has decided to learn how to drive a manual transmission! I gave her her first lesson this weekend, and it went pretty well. We’re still married, and she wants to keep learning.

The 135i isn’t the best car to learn manual with, because it has hill assist and the clutch has almost no feel whatsoever. She had things figured out pretty quick, though. She takes too long to get started on hills, so the hill assist lets go and makes things worse, but she figured it out. It was funny when I told her she needs to push in the clutch every time she comes to a stop. “What!? I don’t like that.”

One major problem is that even with the seat all the way forward she has trouble reaching the clutch and pushing it in all the way. Anyone have any tips to help with this?

I’ve actually gotten used to not pushing the clutch in all the way, but my car doesn’t have hill assist and (although it’s the first car I’ve driven) I think I can say the clutch feel is good enough where I can quick shift without going all the way. But that will take time to perfect. (For upshifting and downshifting its not that hard, but obviously I dont do it for starts and things like that.)

Yup, new clutches are hard to learn on, zero feed back. My 20 year old wagon lets your left foot know exactly when youre making contact. She just need to practice enough to know where the disengagement is, then that’s as far as she’ll have to go.

Remove the spring on the clutch pedal, it makes it feel like a different clutch.

Even though it’s hydraulic? Removing the spring would add feel, or just make it harder to push?
